UPLB Freshie Clinches 4th Runner-Up in the 28th PSQ National Finals

Genesis Haylan C. Mendoza, a BS Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship first-year student from the University of the Philippines Los Baños, brought pride to CALABARZON and UP Los Baños by finishing as the 4th Runner-Up in the National Finals of the 28th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ). This annual competition, organized by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI), brings together top-performing college freshmen from all regions of the Philippines to showcase their knowledge and skills in statistics as acquired from the secondary education curriculum.

Mendoza’s journey to the national finals was marked by a series of outstanding victories. Guided by his coaches from the Institute of Statistics, Asst. Prof. Maurice C. Borromeo and Asst. Prof. Leonard Allan F. Almero, Mendoza first triumphed in the Laguna Provincial Eliminations as the 1st Runner Up. He then went on to win the CALABARZON Regional Championships, earning the title of CALABARZON Regional champion and securing his place as the region’s representative in the national finals.

The PSQ National Finals featured a tight race among the top 5 finishers. Mendoza’s 4th Runner-Up finish reflects his exceptional skills, thorough preparation, and perseverance. It highlights the strong mentorship of his coaches and the support he received from the UPLB community.

The PSQ plays a vital role in fostering awareness of the importance of statistics among Filipino youth, encouraging data-driven thinking and decision-making. Mendoza’s achievement exemplifies the value of cultivating statistical literacy and talent in the country.
