Last November 23 2015, The UP Los Baños Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) and the UP Diliman School of Statistics (UPSS) held the 16th Joint Student-Faculty Conference on Statistical Sciences at the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA). With the theme “Statistics in the Age of Data and Opportunities,” paper presentations focused on the importance of statistical procedures in extracting valuable information from a mass of data. The conference showcased paper presentations of research activities, special problems and thesis of both faculty and students from different universities. It also served as venue for scholarly exchange of ideas and issues in statistics among students of various schools. In response to the challenge posted by climate change, Project SARAI, funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) was launched in November 2013. SARAI which stands for Smarter Approaches to Reinvigorate Agriculture as an Industry (SARAI) consists of five component projects. One of the main components of the Project SARAI is Project 1. Model Development and Crop Forecasting , is based at INSTAT, with Dr. Felino P. Lansigan as Project Leader. The project aims to construct crop models using processed based and/or empirical models for six major crops namely: rice, corn, coconut, banana and coffee/cacao. These models will be used to provide timely crop advisories to farmers and other agricultural stakeholders. INSTAT Director Dr. CE Reaño serves as Commodity Leader for Coconut in Projects 1 and 2 of SARAI.
Launched last 29 August 2014 in Diliman, Quezon City, the book “Changing Philippine Climate: Impacts on Agriculture and Natural Resources” bagged the 2015 Outstanding Book Award given by the Department of Science and Technology- National Academy of Science and Technology (DOST-NAST).
Last February 13, the SAS® Philippines conducted the 1st Academic Analytics Conference at the World Trade Centre. This conference is aimed at gathering SAS users and programmers from different universities, government institutions, and private companies across the country to share their knowledge and
