Impactful Statistical Research for Accelerating the Attainment
of the Sustainable Development Goals
The UP Los Baños Institute of Statistics, the UP Diliman School of Statistics, and the Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute enjoin all students and faculty to participate in the 26th Student-Faculty Conference on Statistical Sciences (SFCon) to be held on 13 October 2025 (Monday) at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna.
Theme Explanation
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), presents a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all. Achieving these ambitious goals by the target year requires not only political will and concerted effort but also a robust foundation of evidence-based decision-making.
As the world passed the mid-point of the 2030 Agenda in 2023, the urgency of achieving the SDGs has never been greater. While some progress has been made, global reports indicate significant challenges and a need for accelerated action. The UN’s latest assessments highlight areas where targets are off-track, compounded by recent global crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical conflicts, and climate change impacts, which have exacerbated existing inequalities and hindered development efforts. This underscores the critical need for robust statistical research to accurately assess progress, identify gaps, and inform targeted interventions.
The conference theme underscores the pivotal role of statistical research in addressing today’s complex global challenges and in driving meaningful progress toward achieving the SDGs.
The theme encourages students, academics, and researchers to explore how data-driven approaches and statistical insights can inform sound policy decisions, monitor development outcomes, identify disparities, and inspire innovative, evidence-based solutions to real-world problems.
This year’s theme also further highlights the importance of adopting advanced statistical methodologies, strengthening cross-sectoral collaboration, and leveraging high-quality, timely, and disaggregated data to inform action and accelerate impact. These elements are vital for fostering inclusive, equitable, and sustainable development that leaves no one behind, especially given the current pace of SDG achievement.
Finally, the conference seeks to showcase and celebrate impactful statistical research across key domains such as public health, education, environmental sustainability, economic development, climate action, and social equity—demonstrating the transformative power of statistics in building a more just, resilient, and sustainable future for all.
