Tricia Janylle Sta. Maria joins the roster of students who were awarded the Dr. Mariano B. De Ramos Statisical Excellence Award, with her paper entitled “Spatiotemporal Patterns and Influencing Factors of COVID-19 cases in Quezon City, Philippines”. This award is annually given to recognize and promote outstanding undergraduate research in Statistics. Recipients of the award were posted on a wooden board displayed in the institute’s lobby.
This year, 13 papers were submitted for the competition and three were chosen to present their paper to a panel of judges. During the presentation held last July 25, Sta. Maria bested the other two finalists namely, Jeremiah Ventura and Francesca Bernal who also presented their papers entitled “Forecasting Unemployment Rates in the Philippines by Combining Official and Google Trends Data” and “Determining Factors affecting Basic Illiteracy among School-aged Children in Mindanao”, respectively. The panel of judges is composed of Mr. Romeo S. Recide (former Deputy National Statistician of the Philippine Statistics Authority), Assoc. Prof. Jaime M. Samaniego (from the Institute of Computer Science, CAS, UPLB), and Assoc. Prof. Arnold R. Salvacion, Ph.D. (from the Department of Community and Environmental Resource Planning, CHE, UPLB).
Sta Maria, who was advised by Assoc. Prof. Nancy A. Tandang, Ph.D., received the award during the testimonial program for graduating class of 2022 held last August 3, 2022. She was given a certificate of recognition and a cash prize worth 8,000 Pesos.
