The Institute of Statistics held its testimonial program for the Class 2017 graduates on 23 June 2017 at the INSTAT Lecture Hall. Leading this year’s graduates is magna cum laude, Daniel Joseph Pisano who received the Dean’s Medal for Academic Excellence for having the second highest GWA of 1.2651 among the graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences and the DOST Medal of Merit for Academic Excellence for his outstanding performance as a DOST RA 7587 scholar.

INSTAT: 19 significant years

The Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) marked its 19th year in the college. Tracing its roots to IMSP as the Department of Statistics and Statistical Laboratory (DSSL), INSTAT was officially created by the Board of  Regents on February 26, 1998. Since then, INSTAT has produced skilled and competent statisticians serving inside and outside of the country.

The anniversary celebration of INSTAT with theme “Analytics: Gearing towards Data-Driven Decisions” kicked off with a symposium held at INSTAT Lecture Hall last February 24. The symposium showcased the outstanding papers of  the two teams of BS Statistics students in the recently concluded SAS Analytics Champion 2017.

A Glimpse at INSTAT Research and Extension Activities for 2015

In response to the challenge posted by climate change, Project SARAI, funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) was launched in November 2013. SARAI which stands for Smarter Approaches to Reinvigorate Agriculture as an Industry (SARAI) consists of five component projects. One of the main components of the Project SARAI is Project 1. Model Development and Crop Forecasting , is based at INSTAT, with Dr. Felino P. Lansigan as Project Leader. The project aims to construct crop models using processed based and/or empirical models for six major crops namely: rice, corn, coconut, banana and coffee/cacao. These models will be used to provide timely crop advisories to farmers and other  agricultural stakeholders. INSTAT Director Dr. CE Reaño serves as Commodity Leader for Coconut in Projects 1 and 2 of SARAI.
